Rep. Bera Statement on Supreme Court Overturning Roe v. Wade

Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) today released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which eliminates the constitutional rights to reproductive health care established by Roe v. Wade in 1973.

"The Supreme Court's decision today to overturn Roe v. Wade is a devastating blow to women's rights and reproductive health care," said Representative Bera, who previously served as Chief Medical Officer for Sacramento County. "By dismantling the constitutional protections under Roe, the Supreme Court is opening the floodgates for radical politicians to get in the way of women and their own personal health care decisions."

Rep. Bera continued: "As a doctor, I strongly believe that the decisions made in the exam room should be made between a patient and their physician, not outside politicians. I will never stop fighting for a woman's right to make her own health decisions, including access to full reproductive health care. I'm calling on the Senate to immediately pass the Women's Health Protection Act to codify the rights under Roe to ensure that every American has the right to control their own bodies and futures."

As a physician, husband, and father of a daughter, Representative Bera has long championed women's access to health care and has consistently opposed reckless legislation to limit a woman's personal reproductive health care decisions. Representative Bera voted for the Women's Health Protection Act in September 2021 to codify the constitutional protections under Roe v. Wade. Bera received Planned Parenthood's Champions for Women's Health Award in 2015 for his leadership in advancing access to reproductive health care.
